William Ottaway, the genius behind Thor's racing success, was hired by William Harley in 1913 to oversee the Milwaukee manufacturer's racing endeavors.  This original 1916 factory racer is an example of Ottaway's first effort at Harley-Davidson.

On a nearly identical machine, Otto Walker won the Venice, California roadrace in April of 1915, and then in July, captured 1st place at Dodge City, Kansas.  These two races were Harley's first significant national-calibre victories.
